Open the Eyes of Our Hearts

"Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints." Ephesians 1:18 ESV

Paul wants us to ask God to help us enlighten and open the eyes of our hearts so that we know the greatness of God. He wants us to recognize that Jesus is spiritually rich and that inheritance with Him is powerful and life-changing. Paul also wants us to recognize that Jesus is our hope for eternal life. Jesus created us in His image and wants us to focus and pray about living a life that is rich in spirit. Walking with Jesus, repenting, forgiving others, and becoming more like Him will allow one to have a spirit-filled life along with loving God and others.

This Bible verse reminds me of the song written by Paul Baloche and sung by Michael W. Smith. The song starts off like this:

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
I want to see You
I want to see You
Open the eyes of my heart, Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
I want to see You
I want to see You
To see You high and lifted up
Shinin' in the light of Your glory
Pour out Your power and love
As we sing holy, holy, holy
The song, as you can see, is similar to the Bible verse. It is basically a prayer asking Jesus to open the eyes of our hearts so that we may see His glory. It also indicates a prayer that says Jesus is our hope for eternal life. The song wants Jesus to show His power and love among us in which He does. We see this power of Jesus affecting others in a way that transforms lives. For example, someone who helps a homeless person or feeds the hungry is living by Jesus' example and shows the power of love that Jesus has taught us.
